My Rating :

Wither is one of those movies that will inevitably be compared to others.  In this case its so easy to match it up against the remake of The Evil Dead due to the stomach churning gore that at times beggars belief that this movie was done on a low budget.

As for the story, well some say there really isn`t one but that only does a disservice to what is a pretty decent attempt at a good horror movie.

Yes, its another cabin in the woods kind of set up in that we have a group of friends who travel into the Swedish wilderness for a weekend break.  Unfortunately for them, something evil is lurking in the basement and when one of the group, Marie, is talked into climbing through a basement window she encounters an evil entity lurking in the shadows.

Of course its easy to see where the movie will end up going from here on in.

But its the beginning of the movie that sets the tone.  We see a happy family who had visited the cabin previously but unfortunately they stumble upon something sinister which makes the wife and daughter very ill.  To prevent the sickness from speading, husband Gunner kills his family.

Back to the present day and we see Marie, possessed by the entity and now starting to morph into a souless, zombie, if you will.  Dead on the inside but very much alive on the outside.

After attacking Tove, one of her friends, she is tied up to prevent further attacks and in the meantime the rest of the group try to help for the injured Tove.

When Gunner arrives at the cabin.  He forces his way in and then makes it very clear that Maria must be killed to prevent her `sickness` from spreading to the rest of the group.  Obviously this doesnt go down well with the others but after Gunner tells them what he has gone through himself, witnessing the same sickness spread over his wife and daughter, they kind of give him the benefit of doubt.

Unfortunately for Gunner (and the rest of the group), Tove herself has now been taken over by the sickness and begins to attack Gunner.

The rest, they say, is history.  This is when the movie turns into a bloodfest of sorts with the remaining friends all falling victims to injuries substained after attacking each other.

I guess the story is simplistic in its execution but its a good one at that.  Its a kind-of Swedish mythology.

Whilst the language may also be in Swedish with English subtitles to help the viewer along the way, its still very much watchable.  Some people dont like subtitles but when a movie is done as well as this they subtitles are just a side-note and not really needed!

The effects in this movie are brilliantly done and like I've said above, beyond the expectancy that a low-budget movie has.  The acting is well done and the group of friends seem to gel on screen.

Overall this is a film I would highly recommend to the horror enthusiast.

I`d give it 4 escapes out of 5.
