The Titan (2018)

Sam Worthington has a half-decent reputation when it comes to starring in sci-fi movies.  Titles such as Terminator: Salvation and Avatar perhaps the biggest names I could mention.

So I was pretty excited when I heard he fronted a movie called The Titan.

......  Oh dear.

This movie sounded (and looked quite amazing on first viewing of the trailer) but unfortunately its anything but.

A simple story that may sound familiar to those who saw Christopher Nolan's Interstellar.

Here we have Sam Worthington playing the role of Lt. Rick Janssen who participates in some ground breaking mutation trials which will hopefully enable humans to not only travel to Titan (one of the moons orbiting Saturn) but also eventually live there.

But what starts off as a simple idea soons turns deadly as the 'guinea pigs' (so-to-speak) start to exhibit strange side effects that kill some and change the behaviour of others.

Unfortunately the movie doesn't ever really take-off and instead we spend an hour watching a drab, rehash of older movies (think of The Fly for one!) where we see Sam Worthington spend countless scenes sitting in a huge swimming pool or lying on what looks like an operating table bench. It's sad to say that where The Fly for example, benefits by slowly showing us the side effects of experimental drugs and how they morph Jeff Goldblum into a horrible looking creature, with Sam Worthington's character he looks like a body-builder on steroids morphed with the big alien guy from Prometheus!  Basically it's all a little bland.

But I guess the movie isn't about a morphing human after all so I'm kinda being harsh here!

But that said, the movie, as mentioned above, never really gets going.  Its over an hour before we do see any action and even then its over before it gets going.

I get that human mankind will, in the future, most probably have to leave this rock we called Earth if we are to survive.  I get that movies about this topic will be churned out year after year - I get it!

But when one like The Titan displays little or no invention at all then perhaps writers need to take a seat back and think up something new and ground breaking.

I'm gutted to be honest.

I like Sam Worthington and most of his movies but this time around I think he should have stayed well clear.

Hell, even the excellent Tom Wilkinson (The Full Monty, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Conspirator, Snowden) cannot even save this movie.
